Bucky Absher has officially announced that he is running for Ashe County Sheriff in the 2018 election.

The Ashe Post and Times reports Absher made the announcement January 10th.

Absher retired from the sheriff’s office in January 2017 after serving for 35 years. Absher's retirement came after Ashe County Commissioners voted 3-2 to instate Terry Buchannan to replace then retiring Sheriff James Williams. Buchannan was suspended from office after being indicted on three felony counts of obstruction of justice and three misdemeanor willfully failing to discharge duties.

According to the report, Absher said earning the community's trust in the sheriff's office is a top goal.
