Amy Tilley Bower, a former 5th grade teacher at Cove Creek School, entered guilty pleas in Watauga Superior Court at about noon yesterday and has been sentenced.  Bower was 45 when she resigned on the day before students reported for class back in August, then was arrested the next day on two counts of Taking Indecent Liberties with a Minor and  two counts of Sexual Activity with a Student , both students in their early teens when the relationships began. Amy Bower apologized in court as the sentence was handed down by Judge Phil Ginn, who sentenced Bower  to a 16 to 20 month active term followed by 5 years of probation. Authorities said they received reports concerning the 5th-grade teacher's inappropriate conduct in late July, then found she was involved in sexual relationships with minor male students from 1998 to 2000 and 2004 to 2006. Bower began working for the district as a substitute teacher at Bethel School in 1996, then worked full-time there and at Mabel. Most recently, she taught at Cove Creek School, where she resigned Aug. 19, the day before administration learned of the investigation.   Amy Bower was ordered to pay $6,922.37 in restitution, a $200 fine, court costs, and will be held responsible for the costs of any future treatment for the victims under Ginn’s sentencing. He ordered Bower to undergo sex offender treatment, and she will be on the N.C. Sex Offender Registry for 30 years. Ginn also said that Bower's teaching license would be revoked as a result of the conviction.
