Survey Reveals Possible Graves At New High School Site PDF Print

A recent Archeologist’s survey is suggesting that 19 gravesites rest on the new Watauga High School property. While the survey has not shown bones or confirmed the presence of bodies, geologist Keith Seramur says that radar imaging is revealing grave features, including grave shapes with settled and sunken dirt.

He and assistant John T. Thacker also found 11 stones that could be grave markers. The graves would likely belong to the Rueben Hartley family. County commissioners have not made a final determination of how they would handle the graves, though in the past they’ve expressed their intentions to move any graves discovered to another site. According to local media, descendents of the Hartley family hope the graves would remain where they are and may pursue legal action if necessary.
