Where Mt. Jefferson Road intersects with U.S.
221 Bypass in West Jefferson is about to get a lot safer.
A resolution that
would allow the North Carolina Department of Transportation to prohibit
motorists from turning left or traveling across the bypass was approved by the
Board of Aldermen. While critics like Aldermen Calvin Green and Bob McCoy
thought a traffic light might prove a better option, the design was approved on
a 3 to 2 vote. 41 accidents have been reported at the intersection during a
five-year period. The project is expected to begin in 2012.
