A committee formed to discuss the Golf Course property’s
possible lease to the Town of Seven Devils is to present its findings today at
9 a.m. in the town chambers.
The property, owned by the Cottoms, has caused quite
a bit of discussion among citizens who want the golf course to return to Seven
The plan currently in the works is for the Cottoms to lease
the golf course property for six months in the summer and use it for expansions
at Hawksnest Ski Resort during the winter. Lenny Cottom last estimated the
lease to cost the town around $100,000 a year to cover the property’s mortgage.
While he may temporarily cut the lease in half during the first couple years as
the golf course prepares to reopen, Monday Cottom said he did not think the
lease would be lower than $100,000 in the long run. He claimed the lease would
be the smallest fraction of costs that include renovations, reparation of the
drainage system and operation of the golf course. Cottom said the town should
consider those costs before even thinking about a lease.
Both sides hope to know the feasibility of a lease,
one way or the other, by the meeting’s conclusion today.
