The North Carolina Army National Guard 1451st Transportation Company, headquartered in Boone, is coming home.

The approximately 170 soldiers were deployed to Iraq in May of 2006 and served an important role in transporting equipment and supplies. The company traveled over 1 million miles and earned 17 Army Achievement Medals, 117 Army Commendation Medals, 3 Meritorious Service Medals and 24 Bronze Star Medals. Boone’s Barbara Day thinks that’s worth celebrating. Day encouraged people to wear yellow ribbons and make their appreciation known. She also encourage citizens to make signs and display flags. Businesses can help by putting welcome home messages on their marquis. A welcome home ceremony will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. at Watauga High School and all are encouraged to attend.
