Renter beware—we’ve heard about housing scams from as close as Charlotte—someone rented out houses that were either being foreclosed on or is listed for sale.  There was a similar incident in the High Country, a listing targeted in Seven Devils, but the latest is a scam reported by Wilkesboro Police, reported to them by alert prospective renters. Last week, following up on a Craigslist ad, the couple checked out a house for rent in Wilkesboro, then contacted the lister by email and were told to send $1400—one month’s rent and a deposit. But as they drove by the property, they found a ‘for sale’ sign in the yard, then contacted the listing agent to find the house was only for sale—not for rent.  Further following up, the perspective renters were told the phone number listed in the Craigslist ad was from Nigeria, and police told the couple that their money would have gone out of the country and would probably not be recoverable. Police are investigating, but say there is little they can do locally except warn consumers.
