A couple of fires busied area departments during the afternoon Wednesday, including a number of Wilkes fire departments, battling a blaze at 3838 Sparta Rd, North Wilkesboro. The Wilkes County American Red Cross reported that volunteers responded to the residential fire and assisted the one adult living there by providing food, lodging, clothing, and a storage container, and referring the resident to the Red Cross Emergency Services Department for further assistance.
And with several Ashe County Fire Departments responding to a woods fire on Bear Knob Road outside Jefferson, the American Red Cross volunteers responded and provided drinks and snacks to 40 to 60 firefighters and forestry personnel. It was late in the afternoon before the departments cleared that scene after battling the tenacious fire for several hours, calling in a number of departments for aid.
