Spring Storm 2: High Wind, Snow, Outages PDF Print

Snow, rain freezing on the pavement and high winds hit the High Country late last night, toppling trees and taking out power.  Area law enforcement reported that rain froze on the roadways, then was hit with anywhere from a trace to several inches of snow, making for treacherous travel. Few accidents were reported, but there have been a number of trees down.  In Ashe County, a West Jefferson body shop lost its metal roof, blown off and away from the property as well as another roof taken off as gust of over 60 miles per hour have been reported across the area. Ashe, though, reported little snow from the weather system while Watauga reported the area covered with at least an inch, and three inches in Avery.  BREMCO outages—over 500 customers— are centered along the ridge lines in Northern Wilkes, along the Watauga-Ashe line and where Watauga, Avery, and Caldwell intersect near Grandfather Mountain. There are likely to be lots of cancellations of Church and other activities today, so stay tuned for the latest or check them out on our to closings and cancellations tab.
