Two Hurt as Truck Slams into House PDF Print

Two Zionville men were injured, a home heavily damaged in a crash mid afternoon Saturday on US 421 North in the Vilas area.  The crash occurred at about 1:40 as the 2012 Chevrolet pickup truck slammed into the house at 5192 US 421 North after first running through some fencing and other structures. The truck ended up partly under the house, occupied at the time by the woman who lived in the house, according to trooper Goldsmith of the state patrol. He identified the driver as Russell Campbell of Zionville, who, according to his passenger, seemed to black out.  Passenger Fred Welch Jr., also of Zionville, told the trooper that Campbell seemed to be losing consciousness as the truck ran off of the road to the right, striking the fencing before hitting the house. Both men were taken to Watauga Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries—the woman inside not hurt—but damage to her home was called ‘extensive’ by Goldsmith, who was awaiting more information before filing charges.
