Unified Development Approved by Boone PDF Print

It started as a ‘small’ project, the revamping of the Unified Development Ordinance for the Town of Boone, but after three years, including some angst, some controversy and untold hours of meetings, the ‘small’ project was approved—unanimously—by the board that has largely overseen the UDO development. That board will make its final appearance tonight, briefly, before turning the reins over to a new mayor and council. But in the process of finalizing the current version of the UDO, the council took sage advice from two outgoing members, first Jamie Leigh, “I would encourage the council to really pay close attention to those transition zones—obviously a key part of this new UDO—because so many things are by right, and without those transition zones we could easily allow way too much even by accident.” And Clawson said, “ I agree with Jamie. That’s real—neighborhoods are just so important to this town, we just really need to watch that.” Then, with a series of motions to make some changes and sequence the document with zoning and other legalities, the board unanimously approved the UDO, knowing that the board to be sworn in tonight will see a continuation of the fine-tuning of the ordinance.
