Avery Trucker Involved in McDowell Fatality PDF Print

A Spartanburg SC man was killed when a large rock came off the back of a truck driven by a Newland man, a truck owned by an Avery trucking firm. The 3:30pm accident occurred about 7 miles north of Marion in what the state patrol said was a straight level stretch of US 221. Their report says that a large bolder rolled off of the back of the Burleson Trucking ’88 Freightliner truck driven north-bound by 47-year old Randy Arnett. The rock bounced on the road, then through the windshield of a south-bound passenger car, driven by 62-year old Douglas Mahan.  The Spartanburg man was dead on the scene, according to the patrol sergeant, his female passenger unhurt.  The report blamed the death on the load not being properly secured—the sergeant saying it was a large load on the truck—but he said charges would be filed, but have not as of Wednesday afternoon.
