Wilson's Creek Claims Another Life PDF Print

The waters of Wilson’s Creek have claimed another life, as a Labor Day outing turned tragic late yesterday. The 21-year-old man reportedly drowned in Wilson’s Creek near Brown Mountain Beach Resort late yesterday afternoon, the 911 call coming in at 4:52 p.m., but the victim had been missing for about 45 minutes by then, according to Capt. Larry Price of Collettsville Fire and Rescue. Search crews were at the scene within 10 minutes, but it was much too late for the man. Caldwell officials say the victim was from Guatemala and was at the resort with some friends, but the name has not been released at this time, pending notification of the next of kin. The man was found at around 7 p.m., and it took a number of rescuers to lift the body up a steep incline. Price said the victim had been trying to swim to the other side, but the current proved too powerful. He said a woman jumped in to try and reach him. Cpt. Price noted that this has been a particularly bad summer for drowning, especially in light the vast amount of rainfall, this was the third fatality in the area since July. Responders, divers and crews came from an assortment of law enforcement agencies including the Caldwell County Sheriff Office, the U.S. Forest Service, and Hudson Rescue.
