Appalachian State University Police officers are now officially trained and equipped to administer the anti-overdose medication Naloxone.

The Watauga Democrat reports the announcement was made in November by University Police.

According to the report, the department has been in the process of getting the Naloxone for about a year, writing policy to set guidlines for its use, and training all sworn officers to use it.

Chief Andy Stephenson said having the Naloxone better prepares the department to respond to incidents and to potentially save a life.
