North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper has signed a bill that makes the Northern Peaks Trail an official state trail.

The Watauga Democrat reports that as of July 1st, the Northern Peaks Trail will now be able to take advantage of more funding opportunities from various agencies including the Clean Water Management Trust Fund, the N.C. Parks and Recreation Trust Fund, and the U.S. Land and Water Conservation Fund.

The plan for the Northern Peaks State Trail is a 40 mile long-distance trail stretching from downtown Boone to downtown West Jefferson and would link Howard Knob and Elk Knob in Watauga to Three Top Mountain and Mount Jefferson in Ashe.
