A primary candidate for sheriff in Ashe County has been charged with obstruction of justice.

The Ashe Post and Times reports James "Jimmy" Hendrix was arrested and charged with one count of felony obstruction of justice on Monday June 11th.

The charges are related to his involvement in the October death of Brittany Perkins.

According to the report, Hendrix allegedly removed a suicide note from the scene of the death.

Hendrix was given a $5000 unsecured bond and a July 5th court date.

Hendrix has maintained that the SBI investigation was a political hit job during the campaign.

The case will be prosecuted by District Attorney Sarah Kirkman of District 22A. District Attorney Tom Horner turned the case over to Kirkman in April, citing circumstances that led the DA's office to get involved in this case under former sheriff Terry Buchanan.
