The Ashe County Planning Board agreed to issue a permit to D.J. Cecile and Appalachian Materials to construct an asphalt plant at the site of the Glendale Springs Quarry on Glendale Springs Road.

The Ashe Post and Times reports the board voted 3-2 in favor of issuing the permit after nearly three years of deliberation among attorneys,  Ashe County and the Ashe County Planning Board.

There has been opposition to the asphalt plant from the Ashe County community as well as the Blue Ridge Environmental Defense League, that claimed that the Asphalt Plant would harm the air quality, affecting Camp New Hope, a nearby camp for children with life-threatening medical conditions. According to the report, air quality studies have disproved the risk for significant air pollution.
