An officer involved shooting has left one man dead in Alleghany County.

WXII TV reports it happened just before midnight Wednesday.

According to the report, an Alleghany County Sheriff's deputy received a call from the communications office about a person waiting in the lobby that needed to speak with him. Officials say the deputy arrived and walked through the lobby door where 39-year-old Chad Eric Montgomery was waiting.

Montgomery pulled a "large, machete-style bladed weapon" and aggressively advanced toward the deputy. WXII-TV reported the deputy gave verbal commands for Montgomery to drop the weapon. After unsuccessful attempts by the deputy to get him to drop the weapon, the deputy "used deadly force to stop the threat."

The incident was captured on the deputy's body-worn cameras and the Sheriff's Office security cameras. The Sheriff says that footage will be released at a later time.

The report indicated the District Attorney and the NC State Bureau of Investigation has been contacted to conduct the investigation which is standard procedure.

The deputy was not hurt and has been placed on administrative leave, which is also standard procedure.
