Capt. Al Reed of the Watauga County Sheriff’s Office has retired.

The Watauga Democrat reports that Reed spent 27 years at the Watauga County Sheriff’s office, and 37 years total in law enforcement.

Reed, age 57, served as a drug enforcement officer, road deputy, sergeant and lieutenant. For the last 10 years he was captain over the drug enforcement and the special operations units, spent the last four years of duty overseeing the Watauga County Detention Center.

Reed said he he plans to keep up his certifications and serve as a reserve deputy.


The Watauga County Sheriff’s Department has announced three new hires . Captain Kelly Redmon says Jeremy Williams and Kasain Tillman are already on the job, and Cameron Taylor will begin active duty on March 28th.
