Thomas Russell “Tommy” Andrews of Sparta, N.C. went home to be with Jesus on July 25, 2020.
He was born August 21, 1932 in Alleghany County to the late J.K. and Elizabeth Andrews. Tommy accomplished many things and touched a lot of lives during his life. He joined the United States Air Force in 1950. He left the Air Force to come home and help his invalid father run the family farm. He was a cabbage farmer for many years, co-owned a Massey Ferguson dealership, was a charter member and the first Chief of the Cherry Lane Volunteer Fire Department and started Andrews Trucking Company. He loved to buy and sell equipment and go to auction sales. Tommy liked to drive everything fast, watch Nascar races, mow the yard, work on old tractors and sit on the front porch with his wife. The most important thing he would want you to remember about him is that he loved Jesus with all his heart. He was always telling those he met about Jesus. He was a member of Sparta First Baptist Church since 1977 and a Deacon since 1978. Being part of Gideons International was a very important part of his life that brought him tremendous joy. Distributing Bibles in New York City on several occasions with the Gideons was a highlight for him. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Patsy Hill Andrews. He is also survived by a son, Mike Andrews of Glade Valley, and a daughter, Mary Beth Hayes and her husband Henry of Sparta. He had two grandchildren, Steven Hayes and his wife Ashley of Kernersville, and Mark Hayes and his wife Lacey Jaye of Clemmons. One great granddaughter, Zara Oaklynn Hayes also survives along with several nieces and nephews. Due to precautions for COVID-19, there will be a private graveside service for Tommy at Sparta Cemetery. Flowers are appreciated, or family asks that donations be made to Alleghany Camp of Gideons International, PO Box 1891, Sparta, N.C. 28675, or to Mountain Valley Hospice, 401 Technology Lane, Suite 200, Mount Airy, N.C. 27030.
