Employment sectors across the board are seeing a sea change. Some experts predict that the
wave of people returning to work and changing jobs post-pandemic will be so large that they’re
calling it a “turnover tsunami.”

Employers are eagerly seeking qualified applicants as businesses open to their pre-pandemic capacity, and job seekers are hitting the ground running. This is the beginning of the return to normal for the world of work. For workers in the High Country of northwest North Carolina, the first signs of a green summer also bring three main changes to how Goodwill Industries of Northwest North Carolina and NCWorks can help job seekers face the coming wave of job opportunities:

1. For those receiving unemployment benefits (UI), the weekly job search requirement
that was waived during the pandemic has returned. As of June 6, all UI recipients must
be registered in the NCWorks job search system and keep a record of at least three job
searches per week. The easiest way to satisfy this requirement is to visit the NCWorks
center in Boone, register, create an account, and search the database on our computers.
Employers are seeing increased numbers of applicants and positions are already being
filled, so don’t wait.

2. The NCWorks center at 130 Poplar Grove Connector in Boone re-opened its doors on
June 7. We’ve been here all along helping job seekers and employers by appointment.
However with the lifting of COVID restrictions, we can see walk-ins. Our computer lab is
open and we have career advisors on hand to assist you with everything you need for a
successful job search. From resumes and cover letters to what to wear for an interview,
we are here to help and encourage you.

3. With doors open and employers desperately seeking to fill positions, we’re looking
forward to hosting in-person skills training and hiring events once again. Goodwill and
NCWorks are teaming up to bring back the Third Thursday Job Fair series each month.
We’ve already hosted an outdoor hiring event for Tweetsie Railroad, and we’re actively
promoting the hiring needs of other employers – many of whom are offering higher
starting wages than they did before the pandemic. For local businesses, we can help
create and advertise a custom hiring event at our location. Stay up to date on training
and hiring events by liking and following Goodwill and NCWorks on Facebook.
The tide is changing for employers and job seekers in the High Country. There are more
available jobs than ever before, and many employers have increased starting wages and are
offering sign-on bonuses to lure qualified applicants. Those are good signs that our economy
will return to its pre-pandemic levels of prosperity.

The stimulus and added weekly UI benefits helped many families ease their financial burdens
during the pandemic. Now that case counts are lower and vaccine rates are increasing, let’s all
do our part to get back out there and make the High Country a safe and economically viable
place to live! A strong workforce equals a strong community.
