Last Saturday, more than 325 volunteers in Avery County contributed to collecting over 80 cubic yards of trash during the Clean Sweep event.

Over 1400 bags of trash were recovered! Countless tires, barrels, bath tubs, dishwashers were recovered, graffiti removed, streams cleaned, and the strangest recovery of the day was a car - a 1950’s Chevrolet Bel Air.

The Avery Journal reports event coordinator Jesse Pope said the antique was found in a rhododendron thicket down an embankment.

Pope said there was no way to know how long it had been there, maybe since the 1960s or 70s.

Pope said that due to the success of this initial Avery County Clean Sweep, it may become an annual event. He said it is a major undertaking, and needs a more sustainable way to make it a permanent effort.
