The Western Youth Network is looking to expand its mentoring program in Avery County.

The Avery Journal reports Western Youth Network has 80 community-based mentors in Watauga but only seven in Avery.

According to the report, WYN Director of Mentoring Services Angela McMann says finding people who have the time to spend as a volunteer has been a challenge.

McMann hopes to add at least 15 mentors to the roster and is partnering with the Williams YMCA, Avery County Schools and other local organizations.

WYN's partnership with the YMCA has resulted in the Avery Mentoring Program to reach out to students who could benefit most from mentoring services.

Anyone can make a referral for a youth aged 7 to 17 they think might benefit from mentoring services and there is no cost to participate.
