Watauga County’s annual Relay for Life event took place Friday. The event kicked off with a survivor lap around the track at Watauga High School. As the survivors made their round, a crowd of supporters cheered them on.
Co-chair Sharon Trivette says the event was a success and was happy with the turn out.
Trivette said, “It looked like a really great crowd there where we’re having our survivor lap and we’ve got a lot of survivors participating. So, that’s what it’s all about.”
Along with raising support for cancer survivors, the event raised money for cancer research. Over 200,000 dollars has already been raised and Trivette says money will continue being collected through August. Despite the poor economy, she believes to match or exceed the 250,000 dollars raised last year. All proceeds will be given to the American Cancer Society.
