Changes At Boone Mall, Meadowbrook Inn, And A New Hungry Howies

Earlier this week, JC Penny Company announced they are closing 138 stores nationwide, including the store located at Boone Mall. The Watauga Democrat reports that several other stores are closing at the Mall. Primo’s Restaurant, Maurice’s, Belk Home Store and possibly RadioShack will be closing soon. The report indicates that Sports Fanatic will be moving to the mall location that formerly housed Sage Sport. The Belk Home Store will be incorporated into Belk’s main store and that space will be renovated. Radio Shack previously entered into bankruptcy earlier this month and the Boone store was on a list of stores to be closed.

The Meadowbrook Inn of Blowing Rock has been sold. The Blowing Rocket reports that the property has been purchased by Main and Sunset, LLC. Meadowbrook Inn and Suites is a 62 room hotel with 10,000 square feet of meeting space, owned and operated by Dick and Vicky McLean for the past two decades. The new owners will employ Savara Hospitality to manage the hotel, and the new owners say they will maintain the hotel “in keeping with the charm of the local culture and community.” Savara Hospitality provides hospitality management and consulting services to owners of historic inns, boutique hotels and franchised properties throughout the Mid-Atlantic region.

There will be a Hungry Howies location at the former Frogurt store on Blowing Rock Road in Boone. High Country Press reports that The former Frogurt and Quiznos property beside IHOP will be home to a Hungry Howie’s franchise in the future. It’s not clear if the current location near Watauga Village will relocate, or if a second location will move in. Eric Fairbanks, owner of multiple Hungry Howie’s franchises, is renovating the location.
