“With overwhelming gratitude, the Appalachian Women’s Fund is elated to announce that Bonnie and Jamie Schaefer will again be the Premier Sponsor of the annual Woman of Vision Award Luncheon on June 23rd,” said AWF President, Patti Turner. “Their generosity is inspirational,” she added.
Best known in the area as the owners of Westglow Resort & Spa, the Schaefer’s have made an indelible impression on many non-profits in and around Blowing Rock and Boone. For the fourth straight year, the Schaefers have been this events lead sponsor. As founding members of the Appalachian Women’s Fund, they have strengthened the non-profit and in turn, the women and girls served by AWF funding.
“The independence and autonomy of the AWF is what makes our partnership with Bonnie and Jamie a match made in heaven,” said AWF Board Member, Debbie Stevens. “To achieve all that they have in the business world, my guess is that they too, have asserted their independence and broken new ground,” said Stevens. Having the endorsement of the Schaefers gives AWF members a greater sense of pride in their work. The Schaefers philanthropic reach is long and impressive. The AWF is fortunate to be among the list of charities supported by the benevolent duo.
Locally, the Watauga Humane Society, Appalachian State University’s Center for Judaic, Holocaust, and Peace Studies, ASU’s Summer Music Program, the Blowing Rock Art and History Museum, and the Hayes Performing Arts Center, have all been benefactors of the Schaefers’ support. Most recently, two building projects have received funding from the Schaefers: the Humane Society’s new animal shelter and the Temple of the High Country, the area’s only synagogue.
Nationally, both women are politically active and fervent champions of women’s rights. Working with Gloria Steinem and the staff of Equality Now, raising the awareness of human trafficking, remains a priority of the Schaefers. Jamie Schaefer served on the Board of Directors for the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition and together she and Bonnie founded the Run/Walk for the Whisper. Bonnie Schaefer currently sits on the Board of Trustees of the Simon Wiesenthal Center as was awarded the 2011 Simon Wiesenthal Legacy Award. As well, Schaefer is a founding member of the Mount Sinai Medical Center. Honored by the Weimann Institute in 2000, Bonnie Schaefer serves on the Women’s Division of the Weizmann Institute of Science.
Together, the Appalachian Women’s Fund along with Bonnie and Jamie Schaefer, are committed to serving women and girls throughout six mountain counties. Jointly, this partnership supports the disenfranchised in areas of hunger and health, poverty and homelessness, physical and substance abuse, and higher learning through educational growth and opportunities.
