Hunter joins Broncos

It didn't take long for Jason Hunter to find a job.Hunter, a consensus first-team All-America defensive end at Appalachian State University, has signed with the Denver Broncos. Hunter was released by the Detroit Lions on Wednesday, despite signing a $1.8 million dollar contract in the off-season to stay with the Lions. He had 34 tackles and five quarterback sacks in 14 games with Detroit last season.
The five-year pro, who was a member of Appalachian's first national championship team in 2005, is with his third NFL squad. He was signed as a free agent and played for the Green Bay Packers from 2006-2008 before he was released and joined the Lions in 2009.
Ironically, the Broncos play the Lions on Saturday in Denver.

Capel Unveils 2010-11 Men’s Basketball Schedule

Highlighted by 12 home games and contests against four NCAA Tournament participants, Appalachian State University men’s basketball released its 2010-11 schedule on Wednesday.Following a November 4 exhibition against Lees-McRae, the Mountaineers open the season at Tulsa on Nov. 12, marking the third time in four seasons the Apps will open the year away from the Holmes Center.  Appalachian returns home briefly to host Montreat in the home opener on Nov. 16. Following that game, the squad takes its longest road trip of the season to play six games spanning more than three weeks. Full Story

Smith Named to Butkus Award Watch List

Appalachian State University linebacker D.J. Smith is one of 51 college football players — and the only one from the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS — formerly Division I-AA) — on the official watch list for the 2010 Butkus Award, which was announced on Tuesday. In its 26th year, the Butkus Award annually recognizes the nation’s top linebackers at the professional, collegiate and high-school levels.

Morgan Named to USTFCCCA all-Academic Track and Field Team

Appalachian State University men’s track and field standout Patrick Morgan (Danville, Ky./Furman) was named to the prestigious United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association all-Academic track and field team announced the USTFCCCA office Tuesday morning. Morgan, a graduate student at ASU posted a 3.55 GPA during the 2009-10 academic year, while earning a master’s degree in clinical cardio-pulmonary rehab. Full Story

Snow, Harper named West Assistants

Adrian Snow, who led the Watauga High football team to a pair of Final Four appearances, and Tom Harper of Alexander Central have been named assistant coaches for the North Carolina East-West Senior All-Star game next July in Greensboro.
