The Hickory Crawdads celebrated the Fourth of July a day early with a few fireworks of their own. The Crawdads (54-31 overall; 13-2 second half of the South Atlantic League) tossed an explosive combination of solid pitching and two more home runs for a 6-1 win against the West Virginia Power 6-1 at Appalachian Power

Kendra Yearick has been named the new girls' junior varsity basketball coach at Ashe County High by head coach Laura Foster. Yearick replaces Mark Hudler, who has stepped down after five years.

The Lenoir-Rhyne University Softball Team placed a statewide-high five players on the 2014 NCCSIA College Division All-State First and Second Teams. NCCSIA is the North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association.
