In a game that featured four lead changes, Western Carolina rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning and hung on for a 10-9 win over Appalachian State University baseball on Friday evening at Hennon Stadium.
The Watauga High baseball team slipped, stumbled and fell Friday night in its regular-season finale at Pioneer Field. South Caldwell, which clinched the Northwestern 3A-4A Conference championship Thursday night with a 3-0 win against Fred T. Foard, scored three runs in the first inning and defeated WHS 6-2 on Senior Night.
That's been the story all season. The Watauga High baseball team just keeps finding ways to make mistakes at the most critical times. And that was the case Thursday night as the Pioneers wasted a marvelous pitching performance by senior Jesse Illich (2-2).
At least that's what Watauga High boys' lacrosse couch Brett Green is wondering at the moment. The Pioneers (5-7 overall; 5-3 North Carolina Conference 13) earned a split in its season-finale Thursday night against Freedom at Leigh Wallace Memorial Field.
