The Hickory Crawdads snapped a 1-1 tie with a three-run rally in the ninth inning Friday night. Hickory () utilized two hits, two walks, and an error to come away with a 4-1 win over the Delmarva Shorebirds at Arthur W. Purdue Stadium.

The Ashe County High football team finally ended 12 years of frustration Friday night against Watauga. The Huskies (2-0), off to their best start since 2008, defeated WHS 16-13 at Jack Groce Stadium. Kendall Richardson's 37-yard field goal with 1:36 left to play proved to be the difference. The Huskies snapped a 12-game losing streak against the Pioneers (1-1), and they also won their first game in Boone since the series began in 1999.

Appalachian State University volleyball started the 2014 campaign with a victory, sweeping Cleveland State in three sets with scores of 25-22, 25-12 and 29-27.
