Former Watauga High senior Cal Hardee is becoming a trendsetter.

Hardee, a two-time all-conference selection and an all-region performer, will play in a pair of all-star games this week. Hardee, who will attend Appalachian State University this fall, will play in the East-West Senior All-Star game in Charlotte on Wednesday. He will follow that up with an invitation to the North Carolina-South Caroilina Showcase at Coastal Carolina University in Myrtle Beach, SC Wednesday through Saturday.
Hardee is the first WHS player to compete in the East-West game since 2004 and the third in school history. Jacob Chaney, who played his college baseball at UNC-Charlotte and Virginia Tech, played in the East-West Senior game in 2000; Johnny Greene, who set the single-season school record with 11 home runs, played his college baseball at Western Carolina and is currently a member of the Texas Rangers organization (he's playing for Frisco in the Class AA Texas League), played in the East-West Senior game in 2004.
Hardee is also the first memeber of the Pioneers baseball program to play in the North Carolina-South Carolina Showcase. Hardee batted .402 this past season with a .540 sluggling percentage. He also had two home runs, six doubles and drove in 22 runs. Pitching-wise, Hardee was 6-4 with a 2.78 earned-run-average and he led the Pioneers with 74 strikeouts in 63 innings of work.
The East-West all-stars will play a double-header Wedneday night at UNC-Charlotte. Game one begins at 4 pm; game two begins at 8 pm. The North Carolina-South Carolina Showcase begins on Wednesday. The games will be played at Watson Stadium and will be hosted by Coastal Carolina University.

Norris, Linville to play in State Games

The Watauga High baseball team will be well represented this weekend in Charlotte.
Rising senior Dylan Norris and rising junior Max Linville will play for the Region 7 All-Stars at the North Carolina State Games this weekend. All the games will be played at UNC-Charlotte.
Norris, the Northwestern 3A/4A Pitcher of the Year, was 6-3 during his junior year with a 3.83 earned-run-average. Norris had three complete games, a shutout and he struckout 39 men in 45 2/3 innings of work.
Linville, an All-NW3A/4A Conference selection last spring, led the Pioneers with a team-high six home runs, and a .557 slugging percentage. He was also tied for the team lead in doubles with David Martin. They each had nine. He was also tied for the team lead with Matt Proffitt with five stolen bases; and Linville, who batted .278, also drove in 19 runs.
The high school tournament begins Thursday and concludes on Sunday. Region 7 is grouped in Bracket A with Regions 1,3, and 5. Region 7 begins tournament play against Region 5 Thursday morning at 10 am. Region 7 plays Region 1 on Friday at 1 pm, and concludes tournament play against Region 3 on Saturday at 4 pm.
The consolation games and the medal round will be played on Sunday. The consolation games will be played at Hopewell High School in Charlotte; the medal games will be played at UNC-Charlotte.
Cal Hardee played for Region 7 last summer.
