The Watauga High women's lacrosse team will play its first-ever state playoff game at home Tuesday night.
WHS (8-5 and champions of Conference No. 6) will take on Greensboro Page in a second-round game at 7 pm at Jack Groce Stadium. The Pioneers, a No. 1 seed from their conference, received a first-round bye when the state playoffs began Friday night.
Page advanced by defeating Northern Guilford 13-11 in the opening round. The Pirates are 11-4.
"It's so nice to be playing for a trophy," said WHS senior Emily Bushman. "It goes to show just how far our sport has come. I can remember getting up way early on a Saturday morning to play a series of games on a Saturday in Charlotte.
"We had to make a lot of sacrifices the last few years. Our parents, the players and the coaches gave up a lot for this. And it was worth it. Opening the state playoffs at home is a reward for what we've all accomplished."
If WHS wins Tuesday night, the Pioneers will advance to the state quarterfinals Friday night, May 7. They will play either Western Guilford (14-0) or Marvin Ridge (10-4) in that quarterfinal match.
