ASU freshman wins SoCon title PDF Print

Appalachian State University freshman Yue Xu captured the Southern Conference Tournament championship on Tuesday afternoon in Hilton Head, SC.

 

Xu, who owned a four-shot lead after two rounds, fired a four-over 76 on the final round and hung on to best the field by three strokes. Xu had rounds of 69, 72 and 76 and finished with a three-day total of 217 (+1 over). Emma de Groot of Chattanooga made a late charge with a 72 on Tuesday afternoon and finished at four under, three shots back.
Previously, no ASU golfer ever placed any higher than sixth at the conference tournament.
Team-wise, the Apps finished eight overall. They had a three-day total of 946, 82 shots over par. Chattanooga rallied and  nosed out College of Charleston by eight strokes to win the title.
Xu was also named to the SoCon All-Freshman team.
The ASU men finished eighth at the SoCon Tournament. Casey Johnson had a 73 on the final round and finished in 15th place at three over. Former Pioneer Jacob Eggers was 19th. He had a 69 on the final round at four over.
Furman won the tournament championship. Austin Reeves of the Paladins won the individual title with a three-day total of 207. He finished at nine under and bested the field by five shots.
