Pioneers fall to Southern Wayne PDF Print

The Watauga High baseball team suffered its third consecutive loss in the opening round of the Winterville Baseball Bash Saturday afternoon in Winterville, NC.


The Pioneers (8-6), who coughed up threes runs in the top of the first inning, battled back, lost 7-5 to Southern Wayne in the opening round. The Pioneers, taking advantage of three Southern Wayne errors, pulled into a 3-3 tie by the third inning.
Unfortunately, Southern Wayne scored twice in the top of the fifth and pulled away for good. Winning pitcher Cody Davis drove in the game-winning run with a fielder's choice RBI in the top of the fifth. David Martin paced WHS with two hits, including a double and a run-batted-in; Ryan Turner, Baker Stanley and Tyler Jones each had an RBI as well.
Jake Watts got the starting nod on Saturday and suffered the loss. He went four innings, coughing up five runs, four earned with five strikeouts.The Pioneers will now play Greene Central in a consolation game Monday at noon.
South Central rallied to beat Greene Central 7-6 on Saturday. Our next broadcast of WHS baseball will be this Friday night, April 9 at 6 pm on Oldies 100.7 FM. The Pioneers take on A.C. Reynolds in a rematch of old Northwestern 4A foes at Watauga High Field. The Rockets are currently 7-4, and they beat the Pioneers 5-4 on March 10 in Asheville.
