Appalachian State track and field stand out Sean Soderman turned in a stellar performance on Saturday night at the Pan Am Junior Games in Trinidad-Tabago.

The rising sophomore from Charlotte captured the silver medal with a second-place finish in the 3000-meter steeplechase against the world's top junior athletes in the time of 9:10.75. Wolter Mattias of Canada captured the gold by winning the event in 9:05.28.

Soderman qualified for the Pan Am Junior Games by winning the 3000 steeplechase at the USA Track & Field Outdoor Junior Championships in Eugene, Oregon back in June.

Soderman and the ASU cross country team will open the season Friday, September 4 with the Covered Bridge Open at 5 pm in Boone.
