‘We really had a mess,’ Fire Marshal says PDF Print

Insurance investigators are on the scene today of a fire that destroyed the home of Miami Dolphins owner H. Wayne Huizenga on Saturday.

The home was 9,000 square feet and was virtually destroyed in the fire, according to reports. Linville, Newland, Crossnore and Banner Elk Volunteer Fire Departments responded to the blaze.  Firefighters say the home was fully engaged and virtually destroyed by the time they arrived on scene, though they were able to save the master bedroom area. According to Fire Marshal David Charles Vance, his first impression of the scene was grim.

"We really had a mess, had a big fire," he said.

A State Bureau of Investigation arson team is assisting Vance and insurance investigators. With the amount of damage to the home, it is routine to involve the SBI, Vance said. Vance expects to meet with the insurance investigators later today.
