Appalachian senior Mark LeGree, who led the nation with ten interceptions last fall, has been named a pre-season candidate for the Buck Buchanan Award.
The Buchanan Award is presented annally to the best defensive player in the nation at the Division I Football Championship Subdivision. LeGree was third in the voting last season.
Linebacker Dexter Coakley of the Apps won the award twice in 1995 and 1996, and he is the only repeat winner the award has ever had. Ironcially, Coakley is also the only SoCon player ever to win the award as well.
Defensive end Greg Peach of Eastern Washington won the Buchanan Award last season.
And the ASU football team will be on television a total of five times this season. The Apps had another game added to the tube when WLOS Channel 13 in Asheville annouced it will televise the ASU-Furman game October 31 at high noon.
The Apps will have their season opener at East Carolina telvised by MASN September 5 at high noon, and the Apps also will be featured three times (the most appearances by any SoCon team) on the Southern Conference/Sports South TV package.
The Mountaineers will appear at Wofford October 17; at home with Georgia Southern October 24, and at Elon November 14. The air time for all those games is set for 3 pm.
