Appalachian State quarterback Armanti Edwards is the only FCS (Football Championship Series) Division I senior quarterback to be chosen among 21 candidates for the 2009 Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award.
The award, which is presented to the top senior quarterback in the country, is sponsored by the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award Educational Foundation. Edwards, the Walter Payton Award winner last season, racked up 3,843 yards of total offense and a Southern Conference record 41 touchdowns.
He was also a consensus first-team All-America selection, and he was the sixth underclassman to win the Walter Payton Award in its 22-year history. Other nominees for the Unitas Award are 2007 Heisman Award winner Tim Tebow of Florida, Patrick Pickney of East Carolina (ironically, Pickney and Edwards face each other in the season opener September 5 in Greenville, NC), and Riley Skinner of Wake Forest.
Graham Harrell of Texas Tech, who signed with the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League on Thursday, won the Unitas Award last season.
