It was big day for the Appalachian State Track program on Sunday at the USA Track and Field National Junior Championships in Eugene, Oregon.

Sean Soderman bested the field by winning the 3000-meter steeplechase event in the time of 9:05.82. Teammate Bill Campbell, an all-Southern Conference performer this past spring with the Apps, finishsed seventh in the time of 9:26.63.

Soderman finished more than four seconds better than second-place finisher Joseph Whelan, who was unattached at the meet. Whelan completed the course in 9:09.97.

Unfortunately, the news wasn't very good for Jared Stalling, who competed in the shot put event. Stalling fouled on all three of this attempts and didnot place.

Tanner Anderson of East Burke, who won the North Carolina Class 4A state championship in the high jump with an effort of 6 feet, 8 inches on May 23 at North Carolina A&T, didnot participate at Nationals this weekend. He also owns the second-best high jump effort in North Carolina state history. Anderson cleared the bar at 7 feet, 2 1/2 inches at the Western Regional at A.C. Reynolds High School in Asheville on May 16.
