Regional Meteorologist Holds Hazardous Weather Seminar for Local Organizations PDF Print

Former television and current radio meteorologist in the Guilford County area, Randy Jackson, held a hazardous weather seminar Thursday for several area organizations at the La Quinta Inn in Boone.

Representatives from Appalachian State University’s Athletic Department, the university’s recreation department, ASU’s housing department, Watauga County Parks and Recreation, Samaritan’s Purse, and other area organizations were in attendance.

Jackson talked about how these organizations prepare for hazardous weather, the social prospects of weather, severe thunderstorms, extreme heat, tropical weather, earthquakes, and even lightning safety.

Jackson said, “When you hear thunder, lightning is present.  Lightning is what creates the sound.  The biggest problem we run into with lightning education, and especially in sports and recreation, is that people will hear the thunder, but they don’t see the lightning.  They say, ‘I can’t see it, so it must be far off.’”

Jackson’s company, the Hazardous Weather Preparedness Institute, has presented these hazardous weather seminars for companies including US Airways, Continental Airlines, the Southern Conference, Conference USA Football Officials, and several others.

More information about the institute can be found online at www.HazardousWeatherPreparednessInstitute.com.

Jackson also serves as the color analysts for Appalachian State Football and Men’s Basketball on the Appalachian/ISP Sports Network.
