North Carolina’s unemployment rate rose to 11.1 percent for the month of May according to numbers released today by the North Carolina Employment Security Commission.

The unemployment rate increased by four-tenths of a percent from April, after falling slightly from March.

The state’s unemployment rate is almost double what it was in May of 2008, when 5.9 percent of North Carolinians filed for unemployment benefits.

The state’s 11.1 percent unemployment rate is also higher than the national average of 9.4 percent.

Furniture related production and fabricated metal production continue to see the most job losses, while local government and education service saw the most job gains.

The NCESC will release their county-by-county unemployment report later this month.
