As I mentioned early Wednesday afternoon, Watauga High senior Ben Robertson has been selected to play in the East-West Senior All-Star soccer game at UNC-Greensboro on July 21.
But I must make a correction concerning Robertson’s goals and points totals from last year. Robertson, second on the all-time scoring list in school history (with 54 goals and 140 points), and an all-region and all-state selection last fall, scored 28 goals with a single-season school record of 25 assists for 81 points last fall.
Robertson and Jennings Rex, who will attend UNC-Charlotte this fall, combined to score 68 goals last year. That effort also set a new school record for goals scored by a two-player combination in a single season. The old mark was 66 goals set by Patrick Murphy (39 goals) and Josh Honeycutt (27 goals) in 1999. Rex also set the new single-season, goal-scoring record last year as he exploded for 40 goals, snapping the old mark of 39 set by Murphy in 1999.
Robertson is also the first men’s player to play in the East-West game since Ben Norman (Division III Greensboro College) in 2005; Sara Caldwell (Division I Furman, Southern Conference) represented the WHS women in 2008.
