National Police Week to Honor Law Enforcement PDF Print

In a way to honor our country’s law enforcement, in 1962 President John F. Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that dates falls as National Police Week.

Every year, between 140 and 160 law enforcement officers are killed in the line of duty.

As a way to commemorate this special occasion, Avery County will hold an event on Thursday, May 14, at 2:45 p.m. at the Avery County Courthouse Square.  Avery County Sheriff, Kevin Frye, said the 24th Judicial Honor Guard will be conducting the service.  The sheriff and chiefs of local police departments along with survivors of Avery officers killed in the line of duty will lay wreaths followed by the traditional 21-gun salute.

There is also a national effort for everyone to wear blue on Friday, May 15, in honor of the “men and women in blue” who serve and protect our community.
