Due to heavy rains in the area, Watauga High has altered its sports schedule for Tuesday.

The WHS baseball game for T.C. Roberson has been rained out for the second day in a row, and probably won’t be rescheduled. The Pioneers (16-6 overall; 10-2 and regular-season champions in the Northwestern 4A Conference) are scheduled to play the East Burke-Alexander Central winner in the semi-finals of the NW4A tournament on Thursday afternoon at 4:30 pm at MS Deal Stadium in Granite Falls, NC. East Burke and Alexander Central were rained out on Tuesday. They hope to get the game in on Wednesday night down in Icard. The McDowell-A.C. Reynolds game will go on as scheduled at 7 pm down in Marion, and the South Caldwell-Freedom game will be played as well. Game time for that one in Sawmills is set for 6:30 pm. And all WHS post-season baseball games can be heard on 100.7, MAC-FM. Our coverage for the semi-final round begins at 4 pm, either Thursday or Friday depending on the weather and how it affects the tournament schedule..

The WHS softball game with South Caldwell was rained out as well and will be rescheduled for Wednesday at the Sports Complex, weather-permitting. Rain is in the forecast for tomorrow. Freedom comes to town on Friday in the season finale.
WHS women’s soccer will be played with South Caldwell, but the games will be moved to the Ted Mackorell Soccer Complex. The soccer team was hoping to celebrate Senior Night at Jack Groce Stadium, but with all the rain and poor field conditions, the games have been moved. The JV game begins at 5 pm; the varsity match begins at 6:30 pm. McDowell comes to town on Wednesday; Freedom comes to town on Friday in the regular-season finale. Both of those games will be played at the Ted Mackorell Soccer Complex. The Pioneers (6-8-3 overall; 5-3-1 Northwestern 4A Conference) lead Freedom by one-half game for the third place.

The WHS men’s tennis team will move its first-round state playoff match indoors at the Yonahlossee Resort Club in Boone. The match begins at 4 pm. The Pioneers (17-2 overall; and NW4A Conference regular-season champions) take on Northwest Guilford (9-3), a wildcard team from the Metro 4A Conference. The winner of this match will play either Ardrey Kell (13-0, and the No.1 seed from Southwestern 4A Conference) or Hopewell (10-5, and a wildcard team from the Mecca 7 Conference) in the second round on May 12th.The Class 4A Western Regional will be played at Ardey Kell High School in Charlotte this Friday and Saturday. The seeding meeting begins at 1 pm, competition begins at 2 pm. The top four finishers in singles and doubles play advance to the state tournament at UNC-Chapel Hill May 15th and 16th. Steve Lake and Michael Smith will represent WHS in singles play. Brian Geldmeier-Kevin Ashline, and Davis Roberts and Ryan Schweitzer will represent WHS in doubles play.
