US Fifth District Representative Virginia Foxx was in touch with our stations this week. She is serving on a Government Reform Committee Subcommittee that is investigating conditions at Walter Reed Hospital in Washington. Foxx said it points out the role of bureaucracy. She said getting anything done in the federal government is a challenge but we should not have this problem when it comes to medical care for veterans. Foxx said she believes that a clear chain of command and accountability are part of the solution. She said she thought that people should be able to make a request then get it honored or turned down with somebody explaining why it cannot be done if that’s the case or somebody moving ahead if it can. She said that they had not heard complaints specifically regarding Walter Reed until very recently, but in fact, had heard good reports. She had, however, heard requests coming from the High Country on this point: Foxx believes we need larger facilities spread throughout the district. She said she knew of groups in Watauga County that would like to see some sort of treatment facility up in the mountains. Foxx said she could understand that because of the hassle of driving to Salisbury or to Winston for treatment. Foxx agreed that one of the most challenging aspects ahead of the group was addressing the care of veterans who return with psychological conditions as a response to war.
