Possible street closures to make way for construction of a new Watauga High School met opposition from neighborhood residents at last night’s meeting in the current Watauga High School’s auditorium.Proposals were presented to close portions of Daniel Boone Drive Extension and Hilltop Drive.
Boone Town Council and planning and inspection board members opened the floor to the general public's opposition and support of the street closings. Residents affected by the proposed closings voiced concern about the limited access to the Greenway Park, a vital factor in some residents’ decision to live in the area.
A conditional-use zoning request, which concerns lighting of sports facilities and parking for the high school project, was also heard.
County Commission Chair Jim Deal stressed how important the new recreation center and Greenway Park access is, not only for the school, but for the community as well.Future hearings will be held before the Council votes on the proposals.
