A nice day on Ashe Lake near West Jefferson turned deadly for two men on Monday. Five men went boating. Only three returned home.

Detective Rob Powers is still investigating with the Ashe County Sheriff’s Office. It appears the boat carrying the three men kept filling up with water. Hearing screams, an individual ran to the scene to help, according to reports. While Powers has yet to question 19-year-old Robert Stockwell, he appears to be the hero in the incident, pulling one man to safety. A 911 call brought officers to the scene around 5:30, and the search for two men still missing in the lake began. A boat search and a cadaver dog led to the bodies on Tuesday.

The bodies have been identified as 18-year-old Johnathon Jomarron of Jefferson and 18-year-old Juan Jose Jimenez Resendiz of West Jefferson.  There is no indication of alcohol or drugs in what the sheriff’s office called “simply a double tragedy.” The surviving three men are doing well today, according to Powers.
