The Hickory Crawdads took advantage of eight walks and three errors on Sunday night and defeated Delmarva 10-6 at Arthur W. Purdue Stadium. It's also the first
time since July 31 that the Crawdads (80-58 overall; 39-30, second half of the South Atlantic League season) have scored ten or more tuns in a game. Zach Cone and Travis Demeritte did the bulk of the damage.
Cone was 2-5, with a home run, two RBI, two runs scored, and a pair of walks; Demeritte homered, drove in three runs, and scored twice; Ronald Guzman was 2-4 with a pair of doubles, he walked twice and he drove in a run.
The game also featured four lead changes. Delmarva (65-73; 27-42) jumped out to an early 4-0 lead. The Shorebirds roughed up Hickory starter Frank Lopez for three runs in the second inning and an unearned run in the third.
Demeritte got Hickory on the board with a two-run shot---his SAL-leading 25th home run of the year---to left field, making it 4-2. The Crawdads tied the game, thanks to a pair unearned runs in the sixth, and they scored both of those runs without the benefit of a base hit.
Joe Jackson led off and reached on an error; Demeritte and Luis Marte both walked to load the bases. Nick Urbanus and Evan Van Hoosier followed with a pair of walks that plated two runs tying the game at 4-4.
Hickory finally jumped on top with another unearned run in the top of the seventh. This time consecutive walks to Cone and Jackson followed by a two-out throwing error by Shorebrids' third baseman Ronarsy Ledesma allowed Cone to score, giving the Crawdads a 5-4 lead.
But Delmarva rallied and regained the lead with two runs in the bottom of the seventh. Ledesma redeemed himself for with a two-run single to put the Shorebirds back on top, 6-5.
But the lead didn't last long. The Crawdads battled back and jumped on top for good with four runs in the top of the eighth. Cone had the big blow with a two-run homer in the inning. Guzman added a run-scoring double and Demeritte drove in his third run of the game night with a sacrifice fly for a 9-6 Hickory lead.
The 'Dads capped things off with a run in the top of the ninth. Hickory reliever Patrick Kaminska (5-1) earned the win after he scattered two hits over three innings with three strikeouts. Nick Cunningham (2-5) took the loss for Delmarva. He coughed up five runs, four earned, on five hits, with a walk, and a strikeout during his two-inning stint.
The Crawdads, who have reached the 80-win plateau for the first time in a season as a Texas Rangers affiliate, wrap up this four-game series and the regular season against Delmarva this afternoon at 2:05 p.m.
