The Avery High football team bounced back from its disappointing effort against Cloudland (TN) last week and defeated McDowell 24-21 Friday night at MacDonald Stadium in a non-conference game.
Tre Jackson backboned the win as he scored the game-winning touchdown with 3:13 left to play. He scored on a seven-yard run, capping off a six-play, 54-yard scoring drive. Jackson racked up 291 yards offensively, including 134 yards on the ground.
Gavyn Malone scored on a six-yard run with six minutes left to play that gave McDowell (0-2) a 21-17 lead. The Titans piled up 402 yard of offense; they ran for 291 yards. Malone ran for a game-high 168 yards and three TDs.
Luke Crowe led Avery (1-1) with four receptions for 93 yards and two scores. Jackson threw was 9-19 passing for 157 yards two TD passes.
Defensively, Heath Austin led the Vikings with five tackles and nine assists; Chandler Stansb had six stops, two assists, and an interception; D.C. Braswell had two tackles, six assists, a quarterback sack, a tackle-for-loss and he forced a fumble; Kyle Taylor had TFL with four solo tackles.
The Vikings wrap up their three-game home stand against Mooresboro-Thomas Jefferson next Friday night. The Vikings travel to Watauga September 12.
