The Watauga High girls' tennis team made it three straight to start the 2014 season following a 8-1 win against Ashe County at the WHS Tennis Courts Monday night.
It was WHS' (3-0) second win against the Huskies in nearly a week. The Pioneers defeated Ashe County 9-0 in West Jefferson in their season opener last Wednesday.
Meghan Smith led the way for WHS. She defeated Hallie Brown of the Huskies in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1, in No.1 singles, and the Pioneers coasted home from there. Kelsi Kanoy followed with a straight-sets victory over Grace Miller of the Huskies, 6-3, 6-2, at No.2 singles.
The Pioneers clinched the match when Elizabeth Allport knocked off Rae Zeller, 6-2, 6-0, at No.5 singles. Smith and Ali Maupin picked up a win at No.1 doubles; Addie Hall and Annika Davidson were victorious at No.2 doubles.
Ashe County avoided the shutout as Abby Marley and Zeller teamed up for a win at No.3 doubles. They knocked off Lucy Gray and Allport, 8-2.
Sarah Copeland won her exhibition match in singles play; Pia Owen and Katie Mac Knight won their exhibition match in doubles play.
The Pioneers will face their stiffest test of the season, so far, on Wednesday when they travel to Asheville-Roberson for a 4:30 p.m. match.
